In this case, that rather vague term refers to what is effectively an upgrade to the Nike+iPod system, with the iPhone's accelerometer and other built-in capabilities also coming into play in addition to the usual external sensors. It doesn't stop with workouts, however, with the patent applications also indicating plans for a diet coach of sorts, which could even make use of the iPhone's camera to scan bar codes on products. Those components would also of course all work together, with the system able to suggest workouts based on your diet and physical condition and vice versa. Of course, these being patent applications, there's no indication as to when we might actually see such a a system, but it sure seems a good deal more likely than some of Apple's other ideas.

Researchers at Toshiba in Japan have created a talking bot that can be used as a voice-activated universal remote in addition to formulating plots about terminating humans. The 5-pound, 11-inch-tall android is called ApriPoko, and is capable of learning how to control electronics by watching you and asking questions about your behavior. When you use an infrared device, the robot senses the signal and asks the user "What did you just do?" If you say something akin to "I turned on the TV," it will commit the command to memory, and you can operate those functions by voice. Quanta teams with OoVoo on HD video conferencing box for your TV

Quanta is teaming with OoVoo to produce the Quanta Video Messenger -- a 1,280 x 720 pixel / 30fps, multi-point-capable set-top box that plugs directly into your HDTV and home Internet connection (presumably via Ethernet or 802.11n, they don't say). OoVoo is also looking to integrate its wares in existing set-top boxes. The prototype STB is the size of a hardback book and does not currently include a webcam or mic -- those must be plugged into the device separately. They'd better bundle a webcam then, if they hope to generate mass market appeal across familial generations. Early tests of the H.264 video over an Internet connection capped at 512kbps upstream produced the occasional video sputter (when watching a fast moving object) in quality roughly equivalent to DVDs. Fortunately, Quanta and OoVoo have 9 months to sort out any issues as they don't expect to ship until "later this year" for a price meant to be "affordable to consumers."

Ubisoft Acquires Tom Clancy Rights

Ubisoft will have to continue paying undisclosed sums to Tom Clancy for the next two years as stated in the deal, but the agreement stipulates that no further royalties will be paid to Mr. Clancy as Ubisoft continues to use his name for videogames, books and other types of media. Tom Clancy is best known outside the gaming world for his political thrillers, which include the Cold War-based Hunt for Red October. His first foray into the videogame business was as far back as 1998 when he collaborated on the first Rainbow Six game with then developer Red Storm Entertainment. 2000 saw the acquisition of Red Storm by Ubisoft and the beginning of a very fruitful collaboration between the writer and the French game producer. Results include games like GRAW 1 and 2, the Ghost Recon and the Splinter Cell series. Yves Guillemot, the man who is Chief Executive Officer at Ubisoft, said that: "The future of our industry lies in our capacity to create and develop brands that captivate consumers and that present a myriad of opportunities for the full spectrum of entertainment, be it video games, books, movies or other media. The Tom Clancy brand is recognized around the world for offering exciting video games, films and books. Capitalizing on the strong franchises that we've built over the past 10 years, we will take the Tom Clancy game brand to the next level of the global entertainment industry." He then went on to reveal what this "next level" was. Surprise, surprise, it's a Clancy-based MMO! Guillemot says that the company already has the technology that is necessary for MMO development, but that a big recruitment drive is needed to get together all the artists and designers that will work on the title. The costs for the project are estimated at over 40 million dollars. With development not even started on the MMO, it will be some time before we can see anything in the way of game concepts or gameplay, but with the Tom Clancy intellectual property behind them, Ubisoft can really go a long way.

The Hybrid SLI technology offers users of low-end and mid-range graphics cards a new method of improving the graphics performance by pairing up a discrete and an integrated GPU to work as a single unit. Hybrid SLI is based on two of Nvidia's next-generation technologies, called GeForce Boost and HybridPower. The GeForce Boost allows single discrete Nvidia graphics card to "team up" with an integrated graphics core situated on a Nvidia-powered motherboard. The second piece of the puzzle is the HybridPower technology, that adjusts the graphics speed, power consumption and the fan's noise in such a way to match the system's workload. When running graphics-intensive applications, the HybridPower technology would deliver high amounts of graphic computing power, and thus, would increase the power consumption. When running word processing software or multimedia players, the technology would switch to a reduced-power mode. The report also claims that the Hybrid SLI technology will start shipping in sampling units in the second half of April, with retail availability slated for May or June. AT&T says it'll pay a $1.3 billion down payment to the FCC within the next 10 days to get a lock on that spectrum it just won, $500 million of which was paid up front before the auction began. The company will be pushing the remaining $5.3 billion over the counter before April 17, and is financing the purchase with funds from operations and a good bit of debt. We haven't seen a similar filing from Verizon yet, but we're guessing the company is facing similar deadlines for its $9.36 billion of spectrum.
